JCI and the UN Global Compact: Partnership for a Better World
JCI has partnered with the UN Global Compact since 2008 to educate small- and medium-sized enterprises about the benefits of corporate responsibility in a competitive global market, using the ten principles of the UN Global Compact as a guide.
How to Get Involved
JCI members can join the UN Global Compact in two ways:
- Businesses: JCI members can encourage their companies to join the UN Global Compact and promote the ten principles within the organization. .
- Non-business organizations: a JCI Local or National Organization can join the UN Global Compact as a non-business participant.
Apply as a Business
As a business participant, a company:
- Sets in motion changes to business operations so that the Global Compact and its principles become part of strategy, culture and day-to-day operations;
- Is expected to publicly advocate the Global Compact and its principles via communications vehicles such as press releases, speeches, etc; and
- Is required to annually communicate on progress in implementing the ten UN Global Compact principles through a public corporate report (e.g., sustainability or annual report).
To apply, a company must complete the following steps:
- Review the Online Application Guideline
- Prepare a Letter of Commitment signed by the chief executive to the Secretary-General of the United Nations expressing commitment to (i) the UN Global Compact and its ten principles; (ii) engagement in partnerships to advance broad UN goals; and (iii) the annual submission of a Communication on Progress (COP). Sample letters are currently available in English, Français, Español, Deutsch and Português
- Complete the Online Application Form and upload a digital copy of the Letter of Commitment signed by the highest executive. The name of the chief executive who signed the Letter of Commitment must correspond with the entry in the online registration form.
- Notify JCI World Headquarters of your company’s commitment to the UN Global Compact.
Apply as a Non-Business Organization
Non-business participants are an integral to the UN Global Compact. They contribute much-needed perspective and expertise that complements the efforts of business participants. Non-business participants include entities such as civil society organizations, business associations, labor organizations, academic institutions and cities. Each offer knowledge and thought leadership in shaping special initiatives and workstreams; developing tools and research; setting international labor standards; furthering partnership projects; and helping to hold business accountable with respect to their commitments to the Global Compact and its ten principles.
To apply, non-business organizations must complete the following steps:
- Review the Online Application Guideline
- Prepare a Letter of Commitment signed by the highest executive to the Secretary-General of the United Nations expressing commitment to (i) advancing the UN Global Compact and its ten principles; and (ii) participation in the activities of the initiative where feasible. Sample letters are currently available in English, Français, Español, Deutsch and Português.
- Complete the Online Application Form and upload a digital copy of the Letter of Commitment signed by the highest executive. The name of the chief executive who signed the Letter of Commitment must correspond with the entry in the online registration form.
- Notify JCI World Headquarters of your organization’s commitment to the UN Global Compact.
