In line with its 2012 Individual Development Program: “Empowered to meet challenges of everyday life”, JCI Curepipe has immense pleasure to invite you to its first training on “Mastering Financial Accounting for Non-Accountants” which will be held on Saturday 25th February 2012 from 9.00 to 13.00 at the JCI Mauritius Secretariat, Quatre Bornes.

The Contribution fee will be as follows:

JCI Curepipe Members: Rs200

Non JCI Curepipe members: Rs250

However it is recommended for all those who wish to attend the “Mastering Financial Accounting for Non-Accountants” course which will be done at an advanced stage.
In addition, this course will benefit our members and especially our current and future Treasurers in such that they will be in a better position to organize book keeping for the organization. As it is always said: “Only accountants can save the world! Through peace, goodwill and reconciliations!!!…”

As a member seeking to create change in 2012 and beyond, put yourself in this scenario: On your way to your first JCI Local Organization meeting this year, you pass by a homeless man asking you for a few coins. You generously lend him what you can and think, “I can do more,” and resolve to end poverty in your community.

Analyzing the Need

You and your JCI Local Organization members start your needs analysis by talking to a homeless shelter administrator, who explains that most visitors are poor because they can’t find jobs. So you talk to area employment agencies and discover that companies will not hire the impoverished people because they are uneducated.

You then speak to vocational trainers who tell you the impoverished individuals never finished primary school because they lacked a positive influence to motivate them. Finally, you have come to the root of poverty in your community. It is now time to get to work developing a creative solution to provide inspiration to school children to break the cycle of poverty. The key is engaging as many parties in your community as possible.

Taking Action

Starting with the individuals you spoke with, you establish measurable key goals for your project. By working with stakeholders to develop a creative solution, you hope to empower individuals to work and spend the money they earn, bolstering the local economy and improving the community as a whole.

Keeping the key goals from all stakeholders in mind, you and your fellow JCI members will fulfill your commitment to positive change. Whether through an after school tutoring program, mentoring arrangement or other ongoing support, you and your collaborators create a project that is powerful and lasting in its impact.

Evaluating Your Results

Both during and after the completion of your project, you meet with project stakeholders, talk about your efforts and the next steps you must take. Whether it’s continuing the efforts you’ve been making or adapting your strategy to changing needs, you will only create lasting change by ensuring your projects are relevant and effective through ongoing evaluation.

Through the JCI Active Citizen Framework, once you analyze community needs, take action and evaluate your results, your community will start to change for the better. Use these steps to organize your ideas and create lasting, meaningful change for your fellow citizens. Although every community is unique and each has its own issues, your project may be relevant to many other JCI members looking to make a similar change in their hometowns. You not only help change your community, but also help those seeking to change theirs throughout the world.

The aim of the event themed ‘A Tea Party at the Sainte Coeur de Marie Residential Care Home (Curepipe)‘ is to spend quality time around a cup of tea with the elderly residents of the home with a view to brighten their day by interacting with them and having refreshments together. A distribution of gift packs to the residents has also been planned.

Elderly people are very important in our modern society; they are mostly the reason for our existence; they are the backbone of our society. Elderly people have spent a lot of time in the world and have seen things and know things that the younger generation have not witnessed or do not understand. They have shown us and continue to show us what can be done and exactly how it is done. As rightly stated by Andy Rooney “The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.”

In that essence, the Project Director, Vida Ramkoosalsing, and her team have the pleasure to invite you to spend some time and bring a smile in the lives of these elderly persons. The Project Director also makes a humble appeal to all those who wish to help with any kind of contribution to the residents of the home to please contact her on the 797 1063 before Friday 10th February 2012.

We are looking forward to see you all there on Sunday 12th February 2012 to create positive change together.

<fb:like href='http://www.jcicurepipe.org/news/jci/2012-countdown-to-congress-challenge-begins-now/' send='false' layout='button_count' show_faces='true' width='450' height='65' action='recommend' colorscheme='light' font='lucida+grande'></fb:like>
Learn how you could win a spot to see a net distribution in action during a UN Foundation and JCI Nothing But Nets trip to Africa.

Since the JCI Nothing But Nets campaign began in 2008, we’ve seen great progress in the global campaign to end malaria deaths. When we started, a child died of malaria every 30 seconds. Then last year, it became every 45 seconds. Now, a child dies of malaria every 60 seconds. Although the numbers show the campaign against malaria has been effective, we all know that even one child dying of malaria is too many.

In 2012, the stakes are getting higher. The UN Foundation is offering JCI members a once-in-a-lifetime experience as a prize for the JCI Countdown to Congress. Using a new online fundraising platform called Crowdrise, JCI National Organizations and members can compete to win.

The Competition is On

Beginning in 2009, JCI National Organizations have joined the competition to raise money to save lives leading up to each JCI World Congress in the JCI Nothing But Nets Countdown to Congress Challenge.

In 2012, the UN Foundation is offering a prize for winners of the 2012 Countdown to Congress Challenge: the opportunity to join the UN Foundation during a trip to Africa to observe a net distribution in action. Each of the top three JCI National Organization winners will have the chance to select one representative to join a UN Foundation observation trip in early 2013. Additionally, the top individual fundraiser will have the opportunity to join the observation trip.

The JCI National Organization winners will be decided by total donations raised from January 1, 2012 until the beginning of the 2012 JCI World Congress in Taipei, Taiwan. The individual winner will be determined by total donations raised by that individual from January 1, 2012 until the beginning of World Congress. Anyone is eligible to win as an individual, including members, nonmembers and friends of JCI.

Get Started

To begin your fundraising for the 2012 JCI Countdown to Congress, create your own team on Crowdrise (http://www.crowdrise.com/jcinothingbutnets).

Find your JCI National Organization team on the “Team Leaderboard.”

Under the team name, click “Join the Team.”

Under “Sign In,” click “Sign Up.”

Enter your name, password and birthday.

Personalize your page with photos and your story about why JCI Nothing But Nets is important.

When you’re signed up, start fundraising to send nets and save lives. Send the link to your page to your friends, family and other JCI members by email, Facebook, Twitter or any other way.

Throughout the campaign, you can see your progress on the Crowdrise page.

Rules and Details

What is an observation trip? In 2011, JCI joined the UN Foundation and members of JCI Cameroon to better understand how net distributions work. Learn more about the trip to Cameroon.

The competition rules are as follows:

Crowdrise is the preferred way to donate for this competition, but all other donation methods will be accepted, including online donations to the UN Foundation’s Netraiser system, check, cash or wire transfer.

Three JCI National Organizations will be selected as winners of the Countdown to Congress. These winners will be the three JCI National Organizations that raise the most money between January 1, 2012 and the beginning of the 2012 JCI World Congress. Donations must be received by JCI World Headquarters in order to be counted. Donations that are pledged but not received will not be eligible for the Countdown to Congress.

Each of the three JCI National Organizations that win the Countdown to Congress will be eligible to select one member from that JCI National Organization to attend the UN Foundation observation trip in the beginning of 2013. The cost of the trip for these three individuals will not be paid for by the UN Foundation or JCI. The cost must be paid by the JCI National Organization or the individual.

One individual will be selected as the winner of the Countdown to Congress. This individual will be the person who raises the most money for JCI Nothing But Nets between January 1, 2012 and the beginning of the 2012 JCI World Congress. Donations must be received by JCI World Headquarters in order to be counted. Donations that are pledged but not received will not be eligible for the Countdown to Congress.

This individual winner will be eligible to attend the UN Foundation observation trip in the beginning of 2013. The cost of the trip for this individual will not be paid for by the UN Foundation or JCI. The cost must be paid by the individual’s JCI National Organization, JCI Local Organization or the individual themself.

The observation trip will be scheduled under the direction of the UN Foundation.

If you have any questions about the Countdown to Congress or Crowdrise, email jcinbn@jci.cc.

And thanks to the hard work of young active citizens in over 5,000 communities, JCI has raised $ 1 million, a milestone on the road to ending malaria deaths through the purchase and distribution of insecticide-treated nets.

Along with this milestone, Chris Helfrich, Director of the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, announced last week that now, a child dies every 60 seconds from malaria. In 2008 when the campaign began, a child died every 30 seconds.

Global Goal, Global Impact
This milestone shows the large impact JCI members can create with the simple purchase of just one mosquito net. From National Organizations participating in Countdown to Congress to individuals requesting the gift of nets to save lives on their birthday, the fundraising has taken all different forms over the years. Each campaign, whether big or small, has created a global impact, changing the lives of African children and their families forever. The partnership between JCI and the UN Foundation has strengthened the campaign and allowed JCI members to give back on a global scale.

Malaria is treatable and preventable. With our network of nearly 200,000 young active citizens as well as our partners on the ground working on education and net distribution, we have the ability to put up a great fight against this disease.

Yet, we cannot stop at $1 million. There are more lives to be saved. Take this opportunity to be proud of the work you have done and take your fundraising to a new level.

Keep Up the Fight
2012 brings a new year and exciting new ways for JCI members to keep giving back. There is an outstanding prize in store for the individuals who raise the most funds for the purchase and distribution of nets in 2012, as we move toward our 2012 goal of USD $500,000. For our dedicated participation and partnership with the UN Foundation Nothing But Nets campaign, top fundraisers will have the opportunity to accompany the UN Foundation and other partners on a mosquito net distribution trip in 2013. These members will have the chance to experience hands-on how the money that they raised is saving lives in Africa. Start your 2012 fundraising now to get a strong start toward this life-changing experience.

Donate now to send more nets to save lives in 2012.

Is your birthday coming up? Start a JCI Nothing But Nets fundraising team and give the gift of life for your special day.

By 2012 JCI President Bertolt Daems
Dear JCI members, Senators and Alumni,
Let me start by wishing you all a very happy new year. I look forward to spending this year bringing our Passion into Action by inspiring each other and working hard together to fulfill our shared mission.

A Bright New Year
Looking forward is, in my opinion, only possible after taking a look back. Last year, 2011 JCI President Kentaro Harada called for a world led by active citizens. He focused on the responsibility of the individual in creating a better future. Indeed, 2011 was a year of tremendous progress for citizens across the world. Generous members and individuals throughout the world donated time and funds to help Japan recover from the worst natural disaster in its history. People throughout northern Africa took the future of their nations into their own hands and continue to work toward a better future with greater freedom and equality. Young people showed us the power of social media and their passion for creating a better life for themselves as well as their neighbors. Throughout 2011, I was continuously impressed by the power of a group of people to influence government and policy
We are now seeing a great transition to governments of law, advocated by active citizens. We are witnessing greater interaction between individuals across borders. Our world is becoming smaller, and because of this, JCI will get bigger and provide even greater opportunities for young people to change the planet. But these opportunities also pose challenges, as we have seen in Syria which was scheduled to host the 2012 JCI Africa and Middle East Conference. The Conference will now take place in Casablanca, Morocco. Although the change is necessary, I would like to thank all the members of JCI Syria and especially those who worked so hard to prepare their first JCI Area Conference.

What’s Your Passion?
These areas aren’t the only communities with challenges. The UN Millennium Development Goals (UN MDGs) were created to raise awareness of fundamental issues throughout our world. JCI has been working hard to advance these goals through needs-based projects. As JCI members, we possess the unique opportunity to create an impact through the framework of the UN MDGs on the grassroots level, where it’s most needed. In 2012, we will go on spreading this awareness and creating innovative projects to take decisive action on problems in our communities. We will look for partners with whom we can collaborate when creating positive change and use the JCI Active Citizen Framework to solve root issues. We will go on engaging leaders, businesses and governments to adhere to the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact. My company, thanks to President Kentaro, is now a committed member of the UN Global Compact. I hope we, as active citizens, can all take the responsibility to understand the Ten Principles and take the action to be part of the UN Global Compact.

Peace and tolerance between individuals and nations is essential to building a brighter future and increasing international collaboration to develop solutions to common problems. Therefore, I hope we will continue spreading the OMOIYARI spirit, using our existing partners and looking for new ones to share this philosophy. Step by step, side by side, we can create a better world by advocating peace.
Overall, major changes in the international landscape continue to unfold. Everywhere, new challenges have emerged that underscore our mutual interdependence. As solution-providers, JCI members can take the lead by transforming passion into action. By mobilizing community, commitment and communication, the active citizens of JCI can turn the tides of history.

In 2012, I encourage you to think critically about how you can embark on a new strategic plan that will build on recent accomplishments and also put JCI on a path to a sustainable future. Keep the following words of wisdom in mind:

“When you dream of peace
And your heart tells you not to stop dreaming; live your passion.
When you dream of peace
And life is offering you the chances to contribute, go for it.
When you dream of peace
And by every step you take, you can already see the next one, and the next one and the next one; keep on walking.
When you dream of peace and you find yourself surrounded by friends with the same dream; collaborate.
When you dream of peace
And a global organization is there for you to help make that dream come true, hold on to it. Know it. Stimulate it. Nurture it. Guide it. Love it, and put your Passion into Action.”

I think of myself as a 2012 JCI member, but with a special task. In this capacity, I am looking forward to creating that result with you, together.

Let’s turn our Passion into Action!

Bertolt Daems
2012 JCI President
