JCI Curepipe Members at the Top of Le Pouce Mountain

Le Pouce, havre de paix et de propreté…mirage ou réalité ?

Les mauriciens se sentent de plus en plus concernés par la sauvegarde de l’environnement et la propreté de leur île. Il arrive souvent que des groupes se mobilisent pour nettoyer des plages et des berges de rivières. Ce mois d’avril a vu plusieurs associations s’engager, tour à tour pour le nettoyage de la montagne du Pouce.

En effet, le 29 avril 2012, suite à une initiative du Health Club de la JCI Curepipe, en collaboration avec l’équipe de Sensation Nature de la JCI Port Louis et le comité environnementale de la JCI Curepipe, plusieurs jeunes citoyens actifs ont entrepris une nouvelle fois de grimper la Montagne du Pouce et en ont profité pour y collecter les déchets qui étaient sur le parcours. Ces jeunes, conscients du fait que la protection de l’environnement est l’affaire de tout un chacun, ont volontairement passé leur dimanche matin sur la montagne, afin de la rendre plus propre. Ainsi, plusieurs papiers de bonbons, cannettes de bière, bouteilles vides, sachets en plastiques, entre autres ont été ramassés. Ces déchets ont été laisses là par des gens inconscients qui considèrent toujours leur environnement comme une poubelle. Les membres de la JCI veulent faire appel à la conscience citoyenne de chaque mauricien pour qu’il ou elle réalise que c’est de notre devoir de respecter la nature, afin de la préserver pour les générations à venir.

A noter aussi la louable initiative de l’association Ecozjen de Petit Verger qui regroupe les habitants du village qui a aussi entrepris une eco-escalade en collectant les déchets sur le trajet, le 15 avril 2012. Un membre de la SSU a aussi expliqué que des opérations fructueuses ont été organisées pour capturer quelques voleurs qui sévissent sur la montagne. Il faut néanmoins privilégier les sorties en groupes lors des randonnées et rester vigilants.

Il serait souhaitable que la Montagne du Pouce redevienne un havre de paix et de propreté, ce qui encouragerait les mauriciens aussi bien que les touristes à (re)découvrir cette montagne considérée aujourd‘hui comme la deuxième plus grande réserve naturelle de l’île (après la montagne du Corps de Garde). Pour plus d’infos, visitez les sites web www.jcicurepipe.org ou www.jci.cc/portlouis.

2012 JCI Curepipe President Jacques David Commarmond setting up the donated PC

Last Saturday 21st of April 2012, Members of JCI Curepipe revisited the residents of the Sainte Coeur de Marie Residential Centre. You will remember we brought these elderly ladies out for Lunch at the beach of Flic en Flac back in February. This time, JCI Curepipe members went to their home in Curepipe to spend an afternoon with them. Several members donated in order to be able to purchase some food and beverages to give the women as tea break on that day. One member even cooked delicious cookies to share with the residents. They were still warm when she brought them.

During the lunch at flic en flac a couple of weeks ago, they asked JCI Curepipe whether we could get them a PC for the home. Which we did! We managed to get a PC donated by Mr Bilal Rahmaan and brought it on Saturday with us, to the joy  of the sisters working there.

We also gave them a photo frame with a collage of the different photos taken in February during the lunch we did with them at flic-en-flac beach. All of them were still very fond of the souvenir of this day out. Some even mentioned to us that they had never gone to the beach of flic-en-flac, or that they haven’t been there for the past 40years. 

Members of our organization were very fond of this quality moment spent with these ladies and glad they could bring some light to their lives.

With a view to commemorate the World Health Day 2012- Ageing and Health, JCI Curepipe proudly announces its second Community Development event to be held on Saturday 21 April 2012 at 14 00 – 15 30 at Sainte Coeur de Marie Residential Home in Curepipe. 

It is fundamental to note that The World Health Day is a global campaign, which aims at focusing on a single health challenge with global impact. Focusing on new and emerging health issues, World Health Day provides an opportunity to start collective action to protect people’s health and well-being.

Therefore, in line with the World Health Day 2012 theme “Good health adds life to years”, JCI Curepipe will be planning a short visit to the Sainte Coeur de Marie Residential Home and thereby spending some quality time with the elderly residents of the home over a cup of tea. On the same occasion, a PC will be donated to the home by the organizing team.

For all those who missed the “Let’s bring Sunshine to our Elders” event at Flic en Flac, here’s a golden opportunity to join the team to bring some joy, happiness and cheer up the day of these ladies.

The “Let bring Sunshine to Our Elders” and “Health Campaign 2012” team will be delighted to see you all there to bring a smile in the lives of these elderly persons.

At JCI Curepipe, We Care…

JCI Mauritius launched one of its flagship projects, JCI TOYP (The Outstanding Young Person) in 1986, and is this year celebrating the 26th Anniversary of this JCI Mauritius Program. JCI TOYP formally recognizes young individuals that excel in their chosen path in life and who are seen as role models for other young people.

And over the past 26 years, JCI Mauritius has been recognizing young active citizens, who promoted business or entrepreneuriat, who lead by example; who promoted culture, who contributed to children, world peace and / or human rights, amongst others.

 This year, JCI Mauritius, has once again launched this program on Thursday 12th April at Café du Vieux Conseil under the theme ‘Zetwal Nou ti Zil’.

The JCI Mauritius National President, National Board Members, Project Director of TOYP, Sandy Suntoo, and the organizing team are pleased to invite ALL JCI members to play an active role in the 2012 edition of TOYP either by sending their own application or nominating someone they deem to be THE ‘Zetwal Nou ti Zil’.

Let’s be together in creating positive change!!!

In 2012, JCI Curepipe is actively implementing the JCI Active Citizen Framework and working towards the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. During it’s March Members Meeting, JCI Curepipe Members were presented with the framework and project directors are actively implementing the recommendations outlined in the “JCI Active Citizen Framework Information Sheet”.

Health and Wellness

Since 2010, JCI Curepipe launched a new flagship project called the “JCI Curepipe Health Campaign” which tends to address the “Health and Wellness” stage and achieve the 6th UN Millennium Development Goal which is “Comban HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases”. Since its Launch 2 years ago, the project through it’s various actions, has:

• Collected more than 100pints of blood with the partnership of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Mauritius and the Blood Bank
• Provided awareness on Sexuality, HIV/Aids, Diabetes, Cancer and Nutrition to more than 50 inhabitants of the Region of Pailles with the help of Local NGOs and partners like Link to Life KISS, Mauritius diabetes association and PILS.
• Provided free screening to more than 200 inhabitants of Pailles for Diabetes and and HIV with the help of Green Cross, Mauritius diabetes association and PILS.

In 2012, JCI Curepipe is looking at it’s historic partners and is also looking for new partners to implement more actions in our communities that will address more of the UN MDGs and create more measurable impact by using the JCI Active Citizen Framework.

Education and Economic Empowerment

In 2011, JCI Curepipe partnered with Women In Networking (WIN) for the Men Against Violence (MAV) Project. MAV is a WIN initiative that falls under UN Millennium Development Goal 3, to “Promote gender equality and empower women”. The project, which has the sponsorship of the Ministry of Gender Equality of the Republic of Mauritius and that of the British High Commission, started with the interview of more than 70 citizens willing to be volunteer facilitators and change makers in our communities. These facilitators, trained over 6 full days by a U.K specialist, Suzanne Williams, have as objectives to, over a period of 1 Year, do awareness sessions with groups of young boys and men aged 12-22 in various communities, sensitize them to the issue of violence against women, and make them in turn become change makers among their peers on this issue.

To date, more than 20 sessions have been carried out by the facilitators on the team in various communities around the island, changing the lives of these young boys and men and preparing for a better future.

Sustainability

Following it’s Strategic Plan, JCI Curepipe is also going for UN Millennium Development Goal 7, to “Ensure environmental sustainability”. We have already approached local partners and organizations to work with them, and a plan of action is being finalized as we speak for sustainable actions and partnerships for the next 2 years.

The JCI Active Citizen Framework

As JCI members, our Mission is to create positive change in the world. We believe that by taking responsibility for our communities, we can create solutions to the problems we see around us.

But just talking about positive change is not enough. To make an impact, we must walk the talk. With the JCI Active Citizen Framework, JCI introduces a concrete method for developing, executing and tracking our initiatives to ensure successful projects and sustainable solutions to problems in our world.

Formerly known as the JCI Better World Framework, the new JCI Active Citizen Framework, an outcome of 2010 JCI Global Partnership Summit Resolution, was adopted by the JCI General Assembly at the 2010 JCI World Congress. The Framework describes a better way to create positive change and measure our impact.

JCI carefully studied the elements of successful local and national projects over several years. This led to the development of a comprehensive system for carrying out projects, engaging partners and monitoring results to effectively address community issues. With the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a foundation, the JCI Active Citizen Framework provides a global platform for measurable, results-driven actionable steps that produce positive change.

Following the 2010 JCI Global Partnership Summit, JCI has committed to developing partnerships across the three sectors – business, government and civil society. The JCI Active Citizen Framework will also provide a context for building partnerships with entities mutually aligned with our goals. By assessing local needs, we can gain a reputation for relevance, and by measuring our results, we can clearly demonstrate our impact.

In line with the JCI Curepipe Individual Development Program 2012, a training on ‘Developing Writing Skills‘ will be organized on Tuesday 27th March at the JCI Secretariat as from 17h45pm to 20h00pm at the JCI Secretariat. 

The training will be delivered by 2011 National Secretary Kiran Bhujun & 2011 Jury representative Hemraj Pallut and will be based on how to prepare professional documents including scrapbooks, project briefs, sponsorship letters, media correspondence in JCI projects.

2012 Local Vice-President (Individual Development), Lenita Sooknah, would like to point out that this training is targeted for all members & aspiring members of JCI Curepipe and is free. It is aimed to help our members & aspiring members in their different posts in JCI and will also be helpful for future potential board members and project directors in preparing professional documents.

In that essence, the 2012 Health Club Committee Director,Yadvee Reesaul and her team have the pleasure to invite you to join them for a healthy and exciting day at Le Pouce Mountain.

Transport facilities will be provided to all participants but the price will vary depending on the total amount of guests using the provided transport. The Health Club Committee recommends that you bring a light sweater, sunglasses, hat/cap, sunscreen, a bottle of water and a light healthy lunch.
